Britons enjoy mouth-watering savings thanks to upturn in ‘discount dining’

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

One of the more positive trends to emerge from the recent recession is the advent of the discount dining culture. Where regular meals out used to be the preserve of the rich, it now seems that restaurants are opening their doors to a new breed of clientele who are only too happy to eat out once or twice a month, if there’s a discount involved.

Research from comparison website Moneysupermarket.com has revealed that restaurant vouchers are now the most popular of all vouchers claimed online, with diners saving an estimated £3bn in the last year alone.

The number of people in the UK eating out using vouchers has increased by 30% in the last year, with more and more restaurants offering discounts online and through loyalty clubs and reward programmes. With the number of people eating out once a month or more also increasing by 11%, it appears that the stigma of using a voucher to help pay for a meal may be a thing of the past. (more…)

Ash cloud chaos could have silver lining for UK tourism

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

As the UK’s airports begin to tentatively open their doors to the public following a week of travel chaos, experts are beginning to calculate the cost of unprecedented disruptions to British air travel.

While it’s clear that the airlines have lost huge amounts of money (around £1.1bn according to the International Air Transport Association), the cost to British tourism may yet prove to be negligible.

In fact, many industry experts believe the UK’s visitor economy may actually benefit in the long term, as the delays, cost, and discomfort suffered by stranded holiday makers may cause people to think twice about holidaying abroad in the future. (more…)

The Rocket Marketing Group’s sponsorship of a local football team pays off

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

footballtrophy_webIt has been a great year for The Rocket Marketing Group and its success seems to have rubbed off on the local football team it sponsors. The Brighton and Hove Rockets football team plays in the Pitch Invasion League, Division 2. After a great season they topped the league beating, 5 Guys 1 Cup to the top position. This means that the team will now be promoted to Division 1 where they hope to continue their good run. This great achievement follows success in Europe earlier on in the year when The Brighton and Hove Rockets won silver medals in The Krakow Trophy.

Alan Saunders, The Rocket Marketing Group’s Operations and Business Development Director and member of The Brighton and Hove Rockets commented: “Along the way we have had pulled hamstrings, seized up backs, strapped up knees and swine flu, but somehow when we needed a good result we dug one out.”

Rocket wishes the team the best of luck for next season.

Are vouchers and discount clubs now established as currency on the high street and online?

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Over the last few years the rise in the use of sales promotion in the form of vouchers and discount clubs, has led to a culture of consumers not leaving the home for a meal/ day trip without one. Because the vouchers and discount codes accompany so much cash into the tills, it is as if the voucher has become a form of legal tender.

In order to compete for customer retention is it therefore essential that retailers now adopt sales promotion techniques and trade/deal with vouchers plus exclusive discounts, even in the run up to Christmas?

Companies use sales promotion by offering discounts, and accept them against payment for a number of products and services. The rise in the voucher is not only specific to the people who you would traditionally associate with bargain hunting, but most people now have used a discount in some form or other. Nielsen online reported that 9.8 million Britons used a coupon or reward site in 2008. In 2008 coupon and reward websites were the second fastest growing UK online sector according to YouGov. And most tellingly of all, 48% of shoppers were more likely to use retailers who offered voucher codes (Nov 2008).

Consumers are now programmed to look for discounts, if one shop isn’t offering a discount then the next one will be, so it is therefore not surprising that retailers are using sales promotion tactics by offering vouchers or exclusive discounts to members of loyalty and membership programmes or discount clubs. By doing this retailers are not only bolstering their presence on the high street but encouraging increased redemption online as well. And as internet shopping becomes the norm for many people, it’s increasingly important for retailers to establish their brand online – where it is even more important to be competitively priced, as other retailers are only one click away.
